Outfits

The selection of proper clothing for your portraits is a critical factor in the preparation for a successful session. If the clothing is noticeable or overbearing in a portrait, it could easily become a distraction.

Keep your clothing simple and complementary. You cannot go wrong with all whites or whites with only one or two family members wearing a complementary pastel or earth tone color.

Light clothing can look beautifully fresh, wear dark only for a specific reason or look on your mind.

  • Make sure your outfits complement well with one another. Stick to a color palette of one or two colors.

  • Solid colors are best, Pastels are usually appealing because they enhance natural skin tones.

  • Keeping the color palette soft & preferably light as it focuses the attention of the portrait to the faces and individuals that make up the portrait

  • Everyone outfits should complement each other (Not a uniform necessarily, but there should be a theme).

  • Avoid loud busy patterns and if incase you choose a pattern then keep it subtle and ideally not more than one family member should be wearing that.

  • Avoid shine and glitter unless for a specific reason or look on your mind

  • Prints and patterns [ except subtle floral ] are a definite NO. This includes logos

  • Make sure your outfits are suitable for the Location, Occasion and complement the backdrop color.

  • Keep the Hair and Makeup clean and simple.

TIP : To make sure all of your outfits go well, try laying out everyone’s selected outfits together [including shoes if possible ] and see if the colors are complementing.

If your eye goes to any one item in particular, you can be certain that the same thing will happen in a photograph then probably you need to change it.
